LED downlights are more environmentally friendly to our planet compared to filament light bulbs, lasting for over five years. A popular lighting fixture across many homes and commercial spaces, LED downlights provide excellent illumination.

Fitting downlights is a job that doesn’t always require an electrician, which is why many people decide to use them. By watching simple DIY guide videos on YouTube and reading follow-along blogs like this one, you’ll be able to fit downlights by yourself. Read on to find out more information on how to install our LED downlights.

What are LED Downlights?

LED downlights are integrated into the ceiling and create a clean, sleek look in your home. Many people like downlights because they’re not overly noticeable compared to other light fixtures such as wall lights, and don’t hang down intrusively into your living space.

No matter your interior design choices, LED downlights will match impeccably. Typically, you’ll find downlights around areas of your home, with bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens being the places you’d predominately see them most.

Known for their durability, versatility and energy-saving nature, LED downlights are timeless and don’t need to be changed as often as regular incandescent light bulbs. If you find yourself constantly changing up the decor in your home, it could prove to be tiring having to find lights to match. The beauty of downlights is that they go with a variety of interior choices, thanks to their timeless design.

Do LED Downlights Have a Long Life Span?

LED downlights are an eco-conscious alternative to regular incandescent light bulbs, and often have an extended life span. One of the main benefits of using LED downlights is that they don’t need to be replaced like traditional bulbs.

Making the swap to LED downlights means your being more planet-friendly. With as much as 90% less energy being used compared to traditional lighting, LED downlights also contribute to helping keep your property's energy consumption down.

With around 50,000 hours of illumination, LED downlights are the best option for any home. Although installing downlights is pretty simple, knowing that you won’t need to worry about re-installing them as new is an added bonus.

How to Install LED Downlights

LED downlights are often fitted by electricians but can be easily installed without help from a professional. Before you make a start on electrical work in your home, be sure to check your electrical circuit is isolated to prevent an injury from occurring.

Although some LED downlights come with informative instructions, it’s always best to gain some additional knowledge and understanding of the procedure you’re about to embark on. Follow along to find out which steps you should take to install LED downlights efficiently.

  • Make a clear marking on your ceiling to indicate where you want your downlights to be positioned. Make sure to get this as accurately as possible, as getting the measurements incorrect could jeopardise your installation process. If you can have someone assist you, then do so - this will help you be able to line up your downlights before you continue on to check that wires or joists aren’t going to be in your way.
  • Using either a plasterboard or pad saw, carefully follow your markings and cut the circles carefully, making sure you’re being as precise as you possibly can be. A common mistake that can easily be made is cutting through pre-existing wires that are integrated into your ceiling. To prevent ruining your wires, refer back to step one and check before you make a start with cutting.
  • Feed your wires through the ceiling incisions and use a Chocbox to connect them to a connector strip. Whilst you connect your wires, hold the ends in place with cord grips and check that your circuit has two wires that are wired in firmly to the Chocbox, apart from the final light which should only have one because it’s the end of the circuit.
  • Once you’ve securely fastened your Chocbox, push two lugs on each LED downlight and push on your light so it pops into the hold that you’ve made. You’ll know when your lights are in place correctly, as they’ll sit firmly and look like they’ve already been built into the ceiling.
  • Sit back and view your new LED downlight fixtures.
