Bathroom Downlights

Your bathroom is a place that you visit not only twice a day but possibly even more than five times! So, it's only natural that you make sure that there is enough illumination in that space. Bathroom downlights, dissimilar to bathroom spotlights are a type of recessed lighting equipped with the protection needed to withstand water splashes, steam and solid elements.

These lights have a higher IP rating than standard downlights because they're exposed to an environment frequently in contact with liquids. If you're worried that your choice of light fixtures will be limited because bathroom lights have a specific requirement, don't worry! Our extensive collection is packed with various sizes, finishes, and colour temperatures so, you'll never run out of options.

Additionally, if you opted for halogen or incandescent light bulbs, they would produce a higher carbon footprint - leaving a lasting impact on the environment and our future safety. Converting to LED bathroom downlights, along with other LEDs around your household will create a safer planet for your forthcoming family. Not only that but you will notice that your LED options will last a lot longer than competitors (up to 50,000 hours in some cases). View below to see your choices!

How to Change a Downlight Bulb in the Bathroom?

Light fitting when changing your bathroom LED downlight bulb is easy. So, if you have an urgent need for bulb replacement, here’s what you have to do:

  1. Turn off your light switch, but you can turn off the breaker linked to the bulb you are changing if you want to be sure.
  2. Use a step stool or a ladder to reach the bulb. To avoid the potential of slipping on the stool or ladder, place a rubber mat or a towel under it. Don’t attempt to step on your bathtub or your skin to reach the bulb.
  3. Depending on the model of your bathroom downlights, you either twist the clear cover until it comes off, or you can rotate the perimeter cover and pull it down.
  4. Once the cover is removed, reach for the bulb and twist it until it comes loose. Screw the replacement bulb. Test if the bulb is working. If not, replace it with a different bulb that works. After you turn off the lights again, attach the cover and you are done!

How Many Downlights Are in the Bathroom?

The number of bathroom lights you need will vary depending on the size of your space. It's expected that the bigger your bathroom, the more lights you'll need. To know the optimal number of bulbs you need for sufficient illumination, here’s what you need to do:

  • Measure the square feet of the room by multiplying its depth and its width.
  • Multiply the result (square feet) by 1.5. This will give you the wattage that you need to brighten up your space.

It would be best to remember that bathroom lighting needs to be more intense than the kitchen and living room. So, it’s better to remeasure and recalculate even if you have existing LED downlights. You don’t want to end up with a shadowy bathroom, especially since it's wet and can be prone to slippage. In addition, it's ideal that you use a natural white or cool white light as general lighting.

What IP Rating for Bathroom Downlights?

The IP rating stands for ingress protection, meaning the level of sealing the electrical enclosures have against foreign bodies. Depending on the zones your lights are in, the IP rating will vary. Here’s a simple guide:

  • Zone 0 – Area inside the shower or the bath. It requires an IP67 and above.
  • Zone 1 – Area above the shower up to a height of 2.25m from the floor. IP45 is the minimum requirement, but IP65 is recommended.
  • Zone 2 – Area stretching 0.6m outside the bath perimeter up to a height of 2.25m from the floor. It requires at least an IP44 rating.
  • Outside Zones – Areas outside zone 0, 1, and 2 where water is less likely to be present. There's no specific IP necessary, but an IP20-rated downlight is recommended.
  • You can use IP65-rated downlights all over your bathroom (and other rooms).
