    Fire Rated Dimmable LED Downlights

If you're fitting downlights between floors in a domestic property, you need a fire rated fitting. Fire rated dimmable downlights are tested to maintain the integrity of the ceiling void in the event of a fire, typically for 30 or 60 minutes depending on the product. Every fire rated dimmable downlight in this collection is suitable for between-floor installations in standard UK domestic construction. Check individual product pages for the specific fire rating period.

Several options are available in both fixed and tilt versions, so you can angle the beam without losing the fire rating. Finishes include white, brushed chrome, polished chrome, and matt black. Multi-packs of 10, 25, and 50 are available if you're fitting out a whole floor. See the full fire rated downlights collection for non-dimmable options too.

    IP65 Dimmable Downlights for Bathrooms

IP65 means the fitting is protected against dust ingress and sustained water jets, which makes it suitable for use in bathroom zones where water splash is a risk. If you're fitting dimmable downlights in a bathroom, you'll need IP65 rated fittings in zones 1 and 2 (directly above or adjacent to the bath or shower). Standard IP20 fittings are only suitable for zone 3 and beyond, away from any water source.

Our dimmable bathroom downlights in this collection are IP65 rated and fire rated, so they tick both boxes for most domestic bathroom ceiling installations. Available in white, brushed chrome, and polished chrome finishes. For a wider selection of bathroom-specific lighting, see our bathroom downlights collection or our guide to IP ratings for bathroom lights.

    GU10 Dimmable Downlights

GU10 dimmable downlights use a twist-and-lock GU10 bulb, which means you can replace the lamp without changing the whole fitting. This is useful if you want to experiment with colour temperature or upgrade the bulb wattage later. Our dimmable GU10 LED bulbs are sold separately and are compatible with the GU10 fittings in this collection. Check individual product pages to confirm dimmer compatibility before buying.

Choosing a Colour Temperature for Dimmable Downlights

Warm white (3000K) is the most popular choice for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. It produces a soft, relaxed light that works well at lower dimmer settings. Cool white (4000K) suits kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices where you want a crisper, more alert light. Several products in this range are CCT tuneable, letting you switch between warm and cool white from the same fitting, which is worth considering if you're unsure or if a room serves multiple purposes.

If you want more detail on choosing the right colour temperature, our blog article on LED downlight colours covers the differences in plain English.

Do Dimmable LED Downlights Need a Special Dimmer Switch?

Yes. Standard trailing edge or leading edge dimmer switches designed for halogen bulbs will often cause LED downlights to flicker, buzz, or not dim smoothly. You need an LED-specific dimmer switch that's rated for low-load operation. The minimum load rating on many LED dimmers starts at 10 to 25 watts, so if you're only running two or three low-wattage downlights on a single circuit, check the dimmer's minimum load spec before buying.

Some of our products include a list of tested compatible dimmer switches. If you've bought our 8w CCT fire rated downlight, we have a dedicated compatible dimmers guide for that product. For general advice on choosing a dimmer, see our LED dimmer switches buyers guide. Browse our LED dimmers collection for compatible switches.

    Where to Install Dimmable Downlights

Dimmable downlights work well in any room where you want flexible light levels. Living rooms benefit from the ability to go from bright task lighting to a dimmer ambient setting for evenings. Kitchens suit dimmable downlights over the dining area, where you might want lower light at mealtimes. Bedrooms and hallways are also natural fits. Our blog covers where to install dimmable downlights in more detail if you're planning a full room layout.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Are LED downlights dimmable?

Not all LED downlights are dimmable. You need to specifically buy a dimmable LED downlight, which will be clearly marked as such on the product page. Standard non-dimmable LED downlights will not work correctly with a dimmer switch and may flicker or fail early if connected to one.

Why are my dimmable LED downlights flickering?

Flickering is almost always caused by an incompatible dimmer switch. LED downlights require an LED-compatible dimmer rated for low load operation. Using an older halogen dimmer with LED fittings will cause flickering, buzzing, or failure to dim smoothly. Replace the dimmer switch with an LED-rated model and check that the total load on the circuit falls within the dimmer's minimum and maximum load range.

Can I use dimmable downlights in a bathroom?

Yes, but you need IP65 rated dimmable downlights for zones 1 and 2 in a bathroom (above or adjacent to a bath or shower). IP65 provides protection against water splash and jets. Standard IP20 dimmable downlights are only suitable for dry areas of a bathroom, away from any water source.

Do fire rated dimmable downlights need to be fire rated to be used between floors?

Yes. Building regulations require fire rated downlights wherever a ceiling forms part of a fire-separating element, such as between floors in a domestic property. A fire rated fitting maintains the ceiling's fire integrity for a specified period (typically 30 or 60 minutes). Without a fire rated fitting, the hole cut for a standard downlight becomes a weak point in the fire barrier.

What wattage should I choose for dimmable LED downlights?

For most domestic rooms, 5 to 8 watts per downlight is sufficient. A typical living room or bedroom with 6 to 8 downlights will be well lit at that wattage. If you're fitting into a kitchen or workspace where task lighting is important, aim for the higher end of that range. Lumen output matters more than wattage: look for 400 to 600 lumens per fitting as a starting point for general room lighting.
