    Pendant Lights for Kitchen Islands

Over a kitchen island, pendants do two jobs at once. They provide focused task lighting where you actually need it and they add visual weight to the space. For a run of 1200mm to 1500mm, two or three pendants spaced evenly works well. Go for a colour temperature of around 3000K (warm white) if your kitchen has warm tones, or 4000K (natural white) for a cleaner, more contemporary look.

Cone and cylindrical pendant light fittings tend to work best over worktops and islands because they direct light downward rather than scattering it. Check the ideas for modern kitchen island lighting on our blog if you want help planning the layout. You can also combine pendants with under cabinet lighting for full kitchen coverage.

Pendant Ceiling Lights for Living Rooms

In a living room, the pendant is usually the main ceiling light, so getting the size right matters. A fitting that's too small will look lost in a large room. As a rough guide, add the room dimensions in metres together and that gives you an approximate diameter in centimetres for the shade. A 4m x 5m room suits a shade around 90cm across, though personal preference plays a part.

For warm, relaxed lighting in a living room, stick with warm white bulbs at 2700K to 3000K. Glass and globe pendants scatter light softly around the room, while cage and industrial-style pendants give a more directional, dramatic effect. If you want to dim the light to suit different moods, pair your pendant with one of our LED dimmers and make sure your chosen bulb is dimmable.

    Bedroom Pendant Lights

Pendant lights work well in bedrooms as a bedside alternative to table lamps, particularly in rooms where surface space is tight. Hanging a pendant either side of the bed at around 400mm to 500mm above the mattress level gives a clean, considered look. It also frees up the bedside table entirely.

For bedrooms, warm white (2700K to 3000K) is the right call. It's easier on the eyes in the evening and creates a more restful atmosphere. Teardrop and cone-shaped pendants with a simple E27 fitting are popular choices here. Our blog has more on adding better lighting to a bedroom if you want further guidance.

LED Pendant Light Fittings and Bulb Compatibility

Most pendants in this collection use an E27 (large screw) lamp holder. This is the most common fitting for pendants in the UK and gives you a wide choice of bulb styles and outputs. LED filament bulbs are a popular choice because they look good in exposed fittings and run at low wattages, typically 4w to 8w.

If you want a vintage or industrial look, our LED Edison bulbs are made for exactly this. For colour-changing capability, a smart E27 bulb gives you full RGB control via an app. Whatever you choose, match the bulb's colour temperature to the room's purpose and check the lumen output suits the ceiling height. Choosing the Right Pendant Light

Ceiling height is the first thing to check. A pendant that hangs too low in a room with a standard 2.4m ceiling becomes a hazard. As a rule, leave at least 2.1m of clearance between the bottom of the shade and the floor in a living area, and at least 700mm to 900mm clearance above a kitchen worktop or island surface.

Shade material affects how the light spreads. Opaque shades concentrate light in a cone below the fitting. Glass and translucent shades let light scatter in multiple directions. Metal cage designs sit between the two. For multi-pendant installations, keep the fittings at the same height unless you're going for a deliberately staggered effect. Check out our blog on hanging kitchen lights for more practical tips on placement and wiring.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What bulb fitting do pendant lights use?

Most of the pendant lights in this collection use an E27 screw fitting, which is the large Edison screw cap. It's the most common fitting for pendant ceiling lights in the UK. You can use standard LED bulbs, dimmable LED bulbs, filament-style LED bulbs or smart bulbs, as long as the cap type matches.

How low should a pendant light hang over a kitchen island?

A pendant light over a kitchen island should hang so the bottom of the shade sits around 700mm to 900mm above the worktop surface. This gives you good task lighting without the fitting being in your line of sight when you're standing at the island. For higher ceilings, you can go slightly lower, but 750mm is a reliable starting point for a standard 900mm high worktop.

How many pendant lights do I need over a kitchen island?

For an island up to 1200mm long, one pendant centred above it usually works. For an island between 1200mm and 1800mm, two pendants spaced evenly is the standard approach. For longer islands above 1800mm, three pendants give better light distribution. Space them equally and position the outer pendants around 200mm to 300mm in from each end of the island.

Can I use pendant lights in a bedroom?

Yes. Pendant lights work well in bedrooms, particularly as bedside lighting hung either side of the bed. Position the bottom of the shade at around 400mm to 500mm above the top of the mattress for comfortable reading light. Choose a warm white bulb at 2700K or 3000K for a relaxed atmosphere, and use a dimmable bulb if you want adjustable light levels.

What colour temperature should I use in a pendant light?

It depends on the room. For kitchens and worktop areas, natural white at 4000K gives clean, practical light. For living rooms and bedrooms, warm white at 2700K or 3000K creates a more comfortable, relaxed feel. Dining rooms suit warm white too. If you want flexibility, look for a tunable or CCT-switchable LED bulb that lets you adjust the colour temperature without changing the fitting.
